wifi-158401_1280The First thing I do once I arrive at the starting country is to go to a cell phone store and buy a sim card with a local number and at least 10 GB of data. The data plan is not completely necessary as WI-FI access is found in every cafe, restaurant, albergue or hotel, all you have to do is ask for the “contraseña” or password.  The data becomes important if you are planning to use the GPS functions of your phone. Having a local number is very practical when making accommodation reservations for the next night.

Don’t call home, use Facetime or Skype instead, once at the hotel after dinner using your hotel’s WI-FI, remember that you will be 6 or more hours ahead.

Note: In Portugal they pronounce Wi-FI the American way but in Spain it is pronounced Wee-Fee as in Pee Wee.
